Prime Garden SRS

Hi friends, Dr Dennis here; nice to e-meet you here and thanks for reading. For those who have been following me from the beginning, I am thankful for sticking with me, and for those who joined me for the first time, I encourage you to read from the first blog.

Friends, what would you do if you had inherited one or even two copies of ApoE4 genes? Would you start sulking, or would you begin searching for answers? I hope you are in the latter group! I hope that I can be a trusted partner with you on this journey, sharing what I have learnt and the AHA moment that changed my perspective on understanding Alzheimer’s. The key to the change in my perspective is the need to shift my thinking & attitude by rethinking what’s in front of us and embracing the available evidence but presented to us in an unorthodox way! I will explain this later. So, before we begin the journey together, can I humbly ask you to forsake the “old ways of thinking and prejudice”? Are you ready? This blog will be shared in two parts to prevent some readers from falling asleep!

The seven methodology – Dr Dale Bredesen, MD

Let me begin by acknowledging the work done by Dr Dale Bredesen and his colleagues over the past few decades. Dr Dale Bredesen, MD, is currently the Chief Science Officer at Apollo Health.  “Dr Dale Bredesen’s career has been guided by a simple idea: that Alzheimer’s as we know it is not just preventable, but reversible.”( Dr. Dale Bredesen – Chief Science Officer At Apollo Health (apollohealthco.com). Led by this conviction and belief, Dr Bredesen dedicated his career to this area of research and developed The ReCODE ™ Protocol. I am privileged to be one of the many Recode practitioners in Melbourne, Australia (Pic B). The seven methodologies by Bredesen (Pic A) are the basis of treating all subtypes of Alzheimer’s in various combinations. The uniqueness of each subtype deserves a unique management plan that combines some or all the methodologies. The addition of the ApoE4 genetic factor will change the treatment plan. For instance, it is recommended that people with the gene should fast for 14 rather than 12 hours to induce successful ketosis.

Friends, I will go through these seven methodologies individually with you, so stick around! I will give a summary of the methods and rationale here.

A. DETOXIFICATION

This is necessary if organic and/or inorganic environmental toxins are implicated. A detailed employment history and all possible past exposures to toxins must be obtained. This is followed by testing, confirming, and implementing a treatment plan. Treatment options include sweating through the sauna and exercise, exfoliating (shed the toxin), and increasing glutathione (antioxidant) levels through food (sulphur-containing) or supplements.

B. SUPPLEMENTS

This is the second pillar of Bredesen’s protocol. As the name suggests, it does not replace a healthy diet. We use supplements to “kick start” some biochemical changes, like ketosis, before our body can produce ketosis. Supplements such as MCT oil (Medium-Chain Triglyceride) are an example.

C. NUTRITION

The third pillar is nutrition. This aspect is the most complex and the hardest one to follow. You have probably heard about the Mediterranean diet on many social platforms. It stems from some Middle Eastern population studies that the prevalence of common diseases such as heart disease is lower than in Western societies and the developed world.   Please be aware that we are advocating for Mediterranean fats. The bad guys are saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol. Good fats are monounsaturated (found in olive oil, for example) and polyunsaturated (found in fish, canola oil, and walnuts) (1).

What are the main take-home messages?

  • We need to shift our mindset and think if we are to have any success in finding the cure for Alzheimer’s.
  • The Bredesen 7 protocol is an example of a Precision medicine approach. It focuses on the findings that there are many causes, each interacting and contributing to Alzheimer’s. Concentrating on replacing Acetylcholine with Cholinesterase inhibitors (current treatment option) is just a piece of an enormous and complex puzzle!
  • The detoxification process focuses on identifying, testing and managing through avoidance, active medical treatment and nutritional supplements.
