Hello, this is Dr Dennis again. It’s so lovely to “see” you here. If you thought you had read the best, think again! So, buckle up, get a coffee, and let’s start.
This topic is a “toxic” one! Some toxins are never heard of or taken notice of. Let’s go through some of the common ones here.
Mercury, which is in dental amalgam. Mercury is a well-known cell toxin that affects the development of the central nervous system. Mercury vapour released from dental amalgam is the predominant source of mercury in the human adult and foetal central nervous system in populations of developed countries (1).
Benzene (inconspicuous) is a natural constituent of petroleum, and you wonder how it gets to my food and affects my brain! Some potential sources are packaging, storage, contaminated water, cooking processes, and degradation of food preservatives such as benzoates. Soft drinks are often implicated in the literature of ‘above-limit’ Benzene levels (2).
Mould is a common mycotoxin, so common that we may have accidentally ingested a mouldy bread without notice. Yuck! Watch this link (https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-05-12/severe-mould-illnesses-cirs-undiagnosed-australia-nt/100106416?utm_campaign=abc_news_web&utm_content=link&utm_medium=content_shared&utm_source=abc_news_web) (4)
This is about chronic exposure to common environmental mould, coupled with unfavourable genetic predisposition, which can lead to a severe whole-body inflammatory reaction and, if left untreated, will be deadly (3).
What about Ticks & Lyme Disease? Ticks are parasites that feed off human blood and can significantly affect human health. Lyme disease is caused by the borrelia bacteria carried by ticks from other hosts, usually animals. If left untreated, Memory impairment is one of the many long-term complications of Lyme disease.
Glyphosate toxicity. Glyphosate is a chemical compound in herbicides and common weed killers. Studies (5) have found glyphosate levels (acceptable level) in a variety of foods, including:
- Honey
- Fruits and nuts (fruit juice, pears, blackberries, limes, raisins, and walnuts).
- Grains (breakfast cereals, wheat snacks, bread, wheat. seeds, rye, oat, barley, and linseeds).
- Vegetables, such as yams, potatoes, peas, and dried lentils
- Meat and fish.
According to research (6), the nervous system is a crucial target for its toxicity. Glyphosate-treated neurons showed decreased “network” formation and connection between neurons, including the hippocampus. You may recall that the hippocampus is a crucial information transition area for short-term memory generation and other functions.
Friends, this subtype of Alzheimer’s is unique compared to other subtypes. They usually present at a younger age, depression is widespread and exacerbated by stress, facial recognition problems, and most “frontal lobe” functions and short-term memory are preserved unless they have genetic predispositions as well. The main challenge is delayed recognition and diagnosis. We need to be vigilant and have a high level of suspicion. Almost all of these toxins/infections can be tested in the lab, so rest assured, as long as we are vigilant, we will find the cause!
The Potential Solutions – General Principal
The management team is all hands-on deck: immunologists, infectious diseases specialists, toxicologists, etc. A health coach is highly recommended, as the management protocol needs careful calibration and must be tailored to the individual.
- Identify the toxin test, evaluation, and detailed assessment by specialist(s) before initiation of treatment.
- Avoid toxins, drink clean water, avoid places with high pollution, spend more time outdoors, etc.
- Optimise detoxification, clean filtered water, and open bowels daily.
- Increase cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, radish, horseradish, and kale. These vegetables have antioxidant and anti-cancer properties.
- Daily exercise, as sweating helps to eliminate toxins.
- Add Vitamin B7.
What is the main take-home message?
- We will miss this subtype if we don’t think about it.
- Once identified, all help is needed as the treatment regime will be complex and needs perfect care coordination.
- If identified correctly and treated, the cognitive deficits are usually reversible.
Friends, there is a lot more information about these on the internet. Please feel free to do your research.
